Sarawak Junior Hackathon

BugCrusher is a virtual coding competition for primary and secondary school students with RM13,000 worth of prizes up for grabs! A team of 3 students and 1 teacher will need to work together to solve problems in programs (bugs), enhance it, and finally present it Live to the judges!
The Competition is now back for the year 2021, get set and ready to register!

VIRTUAL CODING COMPETITION

A team of 4 (3 students and 1 teacher) will be given a program that needs to be fixed within a given time frame. The program will have a lot of 'bugs' or malfunctioning areas that are not working as intended.

The objective is to work together as a team with a teacher to fix all bugs within a given time frame. In addition, the team needs to apply their creative thinking skills to add additional features or enhance the program that they have been given.

At the end of the competition, the team will need to present their work to the judges. The competition will be done virtually, Live, on the assigned time and date.

Prior to the competition, participants will need to go through several workshop sessions to get them prepared for the competition. This will keep the competition fair and accessible to everyone.  

COMPETITION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Team must consist of 3 students and 1 teacher
  2. Participation is only open to primary and secondary school students only.
  3. Teachers must currently be teaching in schools located in Sarawak.
  4. Students and teachers can form group from different schools as long as they are all in the same education level.
  5. At least one of the members representing primary school teams need to know coding using MIT Scratch Code Program.
  6. For Secondary school participants, at least a single member need to have knowledge of HTML and CSS programming language.
  7. Entry fee for each team is RM50 for both primary and secondary school participants.
  8. Participating teams must be able to attend all the of scheduled workshops (prior to the competition) .
  9. All team members must be able to go online and participate in the workshops and competition through Zoom or similar platforms. 
  10. All sessions will be conducted in English, including presentation of final project.

FAQ

Do I need a team to participate?

Yes, you need to form a team. The team will need to consist of 3 students + 1 teacher.

Can my team have a mix of members from different locations?

Yes, your team can be from different location. However, they all must be from one of the schools in Sarawak.

I am not from public school, can I still participate?

Yes, as long as the school is in Sarawak. Public, private and International school are all welcome to participate and form a team.

Can my team have a mix of members from different age groups?

Yes, but the students must all be in the same education level. A team cannot be comprised of a mixture of members from primary school and secondary school. No age limit for teacher.

I have little/no knowledge about coding. Can I still participate?

We recommend the team (at least 2 members) to have some coding knowledge, especially in using Scratch for primary school students. While for secondary school students, knowing HTML and CSS programming languages will be helpful.

Will I be provided with equipment to use for this competition?

No, each participant is required to have a working computer.

What are the categories for participation?

There are two categories for this competition; one for primary school while and one for secondary school level.

Can the parent be the "teacher" in the team?

Yes, but the participating parent must still be teaching in schools in Sarawak.

What coding languages do I have to know?

For the primary school level, we will be testing the participants by using Scratch code block program. Whereas for the secondary school level, the competition is divided into HTML and CSS programming language.

How long is this competition?

This competition is expected to last for four months, from April to July 2021. During this period, there will be briefing, workshop sessions, elimination rounds and final rounds. All attendance will be done online.

Do all members need to be at all the workshops and competition?

For workshops, it is recommended to have all members to participate including teachers (remember we do have most supportive teachers award). Please notify organizer if any of the members can't attend. For the competition, it is MANDATORY for all members to participate.

What are the software required for the competition and workshops?

Please install the latest Zoom app and Google Chrome on your computer to participate in the workshop and competition.

What are the hardwares required for the competition and workshops?

Since this is a virtual coding competition, we recommend each of the member to have at least a laptop with built in microphone and webcam. It is preferred for the participants to use a headset for better audio clarity and quality. 

How do I know if my registration is successful?

A registation confirmation email will be sent to you after you have registered. If you did not receive it, please write in to us at info@realfun.my to check your registration status.

When does registration close? Is there a fixed registration period?

It will be closed on the 1st of May. Any entry after that date will not be entertained.

I have input my details incorrectly in the registration form, how do I make changes after submission?

For any changes to personal details, please write in to us at info@realfun.my

Can we change the team member after registered?

You may send in the request to change team member before it's too late. Any requests sent after the deadline will not be considered.

Will there be a certificate of participation after the competition?

Yes, every member who has completed the competition will receive a certificate of participation.

How do you score each of the team?

There are various factors to the score. Please refer to briefing packs for more details.

Is English a must to participate in this competition?

Competition and workshops will mainly be conducted in English, and team's final presentation will also need to be delivered in English

What are the purpose for the briefing?

The purpose of the briefing is to prepare everyone on the competition so that they will know what we expect to see from them and to make sure that each participant is informed before the competition truly starts. 

Do I have to register for the briefing?

Yes. During the briefing, we will elaborate more on the flow of the competition, so it is imperative for participants to attend. This will ensure everyone will be on equal footing with the competitors. (Briefing sessions have ended for this time.)

Where can I register for the briefing?

There will be a button for applicants below to register for briefing. We recommend everyone in the same team to register for the same slot. Each team only need to register for one briefing. (Briefing sessions have ended for this time.)
